Trial Lesson Process: What to Expect
New Students
In a trial lesson for a student who is brand new to piano, we focus on:
Learning about the keyboard layout.
Making sounds on the black and white keys by improvising music together.
Echoing rhythm patterns and playing rhythm games.
Learning a short piece by rote.
Discussing the student’s goals, aspirations, and interests.
Transfer Students
In a trial lesson for a transfer student, we focus on:
Hearing two pieces (in contrasting styles, if possible) that the student has learned and enjoyed. No memorization or polishing necessary.
Demonstrating my teaching style by working on a short section of one of the pieces together.
Getting an estimate of the student’s sight-reading level.
Discussing the student’s goals, aspirations, and interests.
Improvising music together.
Trial Period
After few months of lessons, we will have a more thorough idea of how lessons are going. At around the three month mark, we will have:
Gotten comfortable working together; the student has settled in.
Learned and polished a brand new piece together.
Established or reviewed fundamental skills.
Gotten into a productive practice routine.
For transfer students, we will have more accurately identified strengths and areas for growth.
